Marcus Pope, owner and instructor, Pope's School of Percussion

Sharing My Passion

My teaching philosophy is simple; teach lessons about life students can take with them everywhere they go.  Lessons like confidence, setting goals, working hard, and achieving those goals not only pertain to percussion but also to many facets of my students' lives.

Marcus received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education/Performance from Alabama A&M University in 2002 and opened Pope's School of Percussion in Huntsville, Alabama in 2009.  Pope’s School of Percussion has an annual workshop, “Back to Basics”, taught by world-renowned artists such Will Kennedy (Yellowjackets), J.D. Blair (Victor Wooten, Shania Twain), Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy), Darrell Tibbs ( Take 6, Donna Summer), and Calvin Rodgers (Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Jonathan Butler, Marvin Sapp, Yolanda Adams, Rachelle Farell).

Marcus has been credited on many projects such as Kelvin Wooten’s “Windows”; JD Blair’s “2012?”; The Waters/Felts Project”; Madison Mission’s “Soulful Christmas”; Tracy Hamlin’s “Better Days”; Russell Smith’s “The End Is Not In Sight”; James Bowman’s “My Perspective” and “She’s an Original”; Jolanda Green’s “Sacred Serenade”; and Sam Pope Jr’s “His Sound” and “Hear Our Prayer.”

Marcus has been blessed with opportunities oto work with many national artists and musicians (including Grammy Award winners and nominees), in all genres such as Kelvin Wooten, Anthony Hamilton, Elayna Boynton, Walter Hawkins, Kim Burrell, Maurette Brown Clark, Eddie Levert, Percy Sledge, Candi Stanton, Ellis Marsalis, Eddie Spanky Alford, Ingrid Felts, Harvey Thompson, James D. Blair, Mac Davis, and Russell Smith.
