Mike Johnston began studying the drums at the age of 5 with some of the greatest educator/drummers of our time including Pete Magadini, Steve Ferrone, and Will Kennedy.
Mike has toured the US and Europe with Hollywood Recording artists Simon Says (drummer) and Warner Bothers Recording artists FILTER (percussion).
Johnston founded the website MikesLessons.com, which offers live online drum lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced players, taught by Johnston, as well as individual downloadable lessons. He also hosts 10 International Drum Camps each year at the Mikeslessons.com Facility.
If you've met Will Kennedy or have seen him perform, you understand he and INSPIRATION are inseparable, if not synonymous. Whether it's during his many years as a member of Yellowjackets or one of the many artists he has recorded with, Will has always been credited for being the inspirational drive in the music. His musicality and finesse are legendary amongst the "who's who" of the jazz world and beyond.
Omari is just one of our clinicians that hails from Huntsville, and we're proud to claim him! Musical influences and mentors during his formative years include Reginald Jackson, Kelvin Wooten, Norris Jones, and Eddie "Spanky" Alford. He started his professional career at age 17, when Ruban Studdard asked him to play on his London and US tours. He's also played with Anthony Hamilton, Rick Braun, Jonathan Butler, and performed with a host of smooth jazz's finest musicians on the Smooth Jazz Cruise. These days Omari's main gig is with Boney James.
Another awesome drummer Huntsville claims as it's own, JD is known in music circles as "The Groove Regulator." His work reaches across many musical genres including country, jazz, and celtic funk. JD has played with some of the biggest names in country music, including Wynonna Judd, Lyle Lovett, and Shania Twain. He's received Dove and Grammy awards, as well as Drum! Magazine's 2000 Country Drummer of the Year Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
Percussionist, writer, arranger, Darrell Tibbs is one of the most creative and tasteful percussionists around. With the ability to take anything he puts his hands on to create music, from traditional drums and percussion, to metal car parts, to water glasses on a table. He is able to draw sounds from places that most people don’t realize are there. Darrell is able to treat playing percussion for music as a chef would treat seasoning for a meal. Darrell knows when to add "salt and pepper" and when "special " seasoning is required.
